Shanti Mantras

 The timeless Shanti Mantras. They can be found in various texts. 

1. Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (1.3.28)

Devanāgarī:
ॐ असतो मा सद्गमय ।
तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय ।
मृत्योर्माऽमृतं गमय ॥
ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥

Transliteration:
oṃ asato mā sad gamaya |
tamaso mā jyotir gamaya |
mṛtyor mā’mṛtaṃ gamaya ||
oṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ ||

Interpretation:
Lead me from the unreal (maya) to the real (unmanifest/primordial truth)
From darkness (ignorance) to the light (awareness)
From death (of the body and mind/in material world) to beyond death (primordial self/supreme consciousness) 
Om, peace, peace, peace."

2. Taittriya Upanishad (2.2)

Devanāgarī:
ॐ सह नाववतु ।
सह नौ भुनक्तु ।
सह वीर्यं करवावहै ।
तेजस्विनावधीतमस्तु मा विद्विषावहै ॥
ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥

Transliteration:
oṃ saha nāvavatu |
saha nau bhunaktu |
saha vīryaṃ karavāvahai |
tejasvināvadhītamastu mā vidviṣāvahai ||
oṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ ||

Interpretation:
"Om, may He protect us both.
May He nourish us both.
May we work together with great energy.
May our learning be radiant and effective.
May we not hate each other.
Om, peace, peace, peace."

3. Atharva Veda

Devanāgarī:
ॐ द्यौः शान्तिरन्तरिक्षं शान्तिः ।
पृथिवी शान्तिरापः शान्तिरोषधयः शान्तिः ।
वनस्पतयः शान्तिर्विश्वेदेवाः शान्तिर्ब्रह्म शान्तिः ।
सर्वं शान्तिः शान्तिरेव शान्तिः सा मा शान्तिरेधि ॥
ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥

Transliteration:
oṃ dyauḥ śāntir antarīkṣaṃ śāntiḥ |
pṛthivī śāntir āpaḥ śāntir oṣadhayaḥ śāntiḥ |
vanaspatayaḥ śāntir viśvedevāḥ śāntiḥ brahma śāntiḥ |
sarvaṃ śāntiḥ śāntir eva śāntiḥ sā mā śāntir edhi ||
oṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ ||

Interpretation:
"May there be peace in the heavens,
Peace in the mid-region,
Peace on earth, peace in waters, peace in herbs,
Peace in the trees, peace among all gods,
Peace in Brahman, peace in everything,
Peace alone, peace everywhere.
Om, peace, peace, peace."

4. Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah (Universal Peace Prayer)

Devanāgarī:
ॐ सर्वे भवन्तु सुखिनः ।
सर्वे सन्तु निरामयाः ।
सर्वे भद्राणि पश्यन्तु ।
मा कश्चिद् दुःखभाग्भवेत् ॥
ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥

Transliteration:
oṃ sarve bhavantu sukhinaḥ |
sarve santu nirāmayāḥ |
sarve bhadrāṇi paśyantu |
mā kaścid duḥkhabhāg bhavet ||
oṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ ||

Interpretation:
“Om — May all beings be happy.
May all be free from illness.
May all see what is auspicious.
May no one suffer or partake of sorrow.
Om, peace, peace, peace.”

Each Shanti Mantra ends with threefold "Shanti" — invoked for removing disturbances from:

Adhibhautika (external, worldly, natural causes),
Adhidaivika (divine, cosmic, fate-based causes),
Adhyātmika (inner, mental, bodily causes).
